Crisp-Ellert Art MuseumBack in February, we did a studio visit with @dustinharewood at the Heather Moore Community Gallery at @cathedralartsproject just before the exhibition “Black Beach” opened in February. The exhibition is a collaboration between Harewood, Malcolm Jackson (@malcjax) and Jordan Walter (@campaignjordie), each considering the historic American Beach on Amelia Island through painting, photography, and graphic design, respectively. We regret not taking more photos, but as the exhibition is currently closed during this pandemic, please check out each of these artist’s feeds to see more of their great work!
“Established in 1935 in defiance of segregation and the Jim Crow laws of the era, American Beach was the largest and most popular black-only beach community in Northeast Florida and became a safe haven for African Americans in the area. Abraham Lincoln Lewis, the first black millionaire in the state of Florida, purchased and led the development of the famous strip of land.” The community surrounding American Beach has fallen into economic decline over the years, and now, like so many communities of color, suffers from rapid gentrification, and is increasingly subject to encroaching development. However, it still remains historically and environmentally important, and holds a special place for many people in the greater Jacksonville community.
