Rembrandtz Art Gallery - 131 King Street - 829.0065

Every once in a while, you come across an artist who has infused their work with a radiance that transcends the chaos of our over-scheduled and challenging times. Joan Baliker has spent a lifetime helping others, and her sculptures are powerfully evocative of unity, peace and tolerance. Her sculptures include "Mother Theresa", "Peace," "Love," "Vision Quest" and others depicting spiritual leaders from all traditions.

We are also welcoming Tim Peterson with his 2009 collection of original hand-painted ornaments. With vivid scenes of St Augustine, these beautiful miniature paintings are all one of a kind.

Please join us for a special evening Friday, October 2nd from 5pm to 9pm. Both artists will be featured during the First Friday Artwalk. www.rembrandtz.com

Butterfield Garage Art Gallery in St. Augustine brings us to the “Annual Garage Sale”. It’s always a surprise what you will find at unbelievably low bargain prices.  Some of the region’s most popular artists exhibit at Butterfield, and one of the reasons they do, is for the opportunity to experiment with their work without the pressures of a traditional gallery. Once an artist becomes popular for a certain type of work, a traditional gallery will invest quite a bit of time and money promoting their artists’ styles of work.  This leads to pressure on the artists to create a consistent look to what they create. The Butterfield artists often use the Annual Garage Sale as a venue to sell work that may be excellent, but does not fit into their normal body of work for a cohesive exhibit. The sale opens August 7th at St. Augustine’s “First Friday Artwalk” with a reception from 5 to 9, and runs throughout the month of August and is located at 137 King Street in St. Augustine. Call the gallery at (904) 825-4577 for more information.

BFA Fall 2008

I have realized that the most satisfying work I create comes from letting go of a controlled outcome.  Although I am letting my mind loose to work freely, my hands continue to work and I am often entranced into a meditative state while working with my sculptures.  This is very spiritual for me and that is why my process plays such a big role in each of my pieces.  It is as if each sculpture I work on gets a little piece of my soul because of the care and love I have put into it.
I mainly work with found objects, most of which come from trees. I find trees fascinating and graceful so it is only natural for me to use them as art.  It is important to me to use only the things that I find on the ground, the things that have been retired. I think of it as giving them a kind of encore performance. There is something inside of me that lights up when I find a wonderful stick on a bike ride or some glorious leaves on a walk.  These little treasures excite me and so the conversation between the material and myself begins.  This hands-on conversation that I have with the material is essential to each piece as it evolves. Because I love natural found objects, it is important to me to maintain their integrity as I work with them.  I love the contrast and combination of materials and am always aware of the harmonious balance of color and texture.
The lines of the human figure excite me in a similar way that nature does.  These lines mimic each other and flow freely within the same aesthetic grounds.  The lines of branches and veins of leaves are so beautiful and alive just as the sensual lines of my figures are.
I enjoy leaving certain elements hidden form the obvious, but gifted to those who wish to investigate. My pieces are intimate, and although often large, are quiet and tranquil.  I am of course pleased when my results are beautiful, but my art is within my process.  My recognition of my passion for nature has stirred me and my art is a reflection of that excitement.

Original Stained Glass Mosaics by Local Artist Manila Clough

Manila Clough was born in Florida, but grew up in Puerto Rico where her parents retired when she was young. She completed her BA at Florida State University with a double major in English Literature and Studio Art. Manila has lived in Sevilla, Spain, Madrid and Belgium, as well as Louisiana and Washington, DC. Working as a gallery director, a college professor and an artist, Manila earned her MA from Georgetown University and two years of her Ph.D at Tulane.

From a lifelong love of art, Manila has now been very successful in creating her one-of-a-kind stained glass mosaic art pieces in St Augustine, Florida. From large scale commissions for the Anastasia Library and Flagler Hospital, to three panel triptychs for private collectors, Manila's work never fails to gain an appreciative audience. Each original piece is hand cut from beautiful sheets of colored glass normally used in stained glass work. Manila sketches directly on to cement board (so the pieces may be hung in exterior or interior spaces), then begins layering in hundreds of individual pieces to create her truly unique works of art. To enhance the gorgeous hues of the glass, Manila also uses many colors of grout in any one piece. Her work as a painter is evident in the subtle shading, balance of light and color and incredibly intricate designs she creates.

Her work may be seen at Rembrandtz Gallery in downtown St Augustine at 131 King Street. 904.829.0065

February 2009 exhibit at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery to feature 10 Years – Past and Present

Butterfield Garage Art Gallery will celebrate its 10th anniversary in historic, downtown St. Augustine with an exhibit featuring the artwork of current and past members. All art will be sized in a 12” X 12” format, allowing the diverse works of this group to be offered at affordable prices for the art enthusiast. Additionally, gallery founder and owner Jan Miller will formally announce the opening of Butterfield Too, a new gallery and workshop space adjacent to Butterfield Garage.

The anniversary exhibit will be held at 137 King Street on Friday, Feb. 6 from 5 pm until 9 pm during the First Friday Art Walk. The

event is free and open to the public with live music and refreshments.

According to Jan Miller, Butterfield founder and fine artist, the milestone event will celebrate long-time gallery members and new

members of the gallery who have been instrumental in helping the business achieve great success in St. Augustine along with notoriety among hundreds of thousands of visitors to the well-known historic city. “It is an honor for me to host the February exhibit and formerly announce our new venture next door, Butterfield Too. We look forward to welcoming more of the area’s top artists to our gallery family and will offer locals and visitors many new workshops and more new art to view,” said Miller. “The 10 year anniversary at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery and the new business will position us among the largest sellers of original and unique fine art in the area,” she said. “We are fortunate to have continued our business and we are happy to be attracting serious and professional artists who work in a wide variety of mediums.”

Since the early 1990s, Miller and her husband Max have established their galleries in St. Augustine to feature only original art and

sculpture, along with fabric arts and furniture, just to name a few. Beginning on Charlotte Street with their original gallery, the Miller’s

refurbished a historic, downtown St. Augustine home to become Jan’s gallery on the first floor and the Miller’s residence upstairs. The

Millers sold the property and invested in a building in 1998 at 137 King Street which was originally an auto repair shop called

Butterfield Garage (circa 1929). Today, the Miller’s are renowned for supporting professional artists and art collectors and attracting

established and emerging artists who are based in the northeast Florida area.

For more information about Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, call 904.825.4577 or visit the website at www.butterfieldgarage.com . The

gallery is open seven days a week from 11 am until 5 pm.
